Gamblers Beget Gamblers 08/17/2009
![]() What caught my eyes was the smile on this little boy's face. The same facial expression I saw on Samson, each time I play the Barney VCD. Most Singaporean play lottery and toto, it is part of our everyday life. I do not consider that as gambling though because you can't lose much unless you bet with private bookies! But somehow I tried to stay away from it. Some thing in my gene tells me that if I start gambling, I will likely to get addicted. It was not until the year 2002 when I went on my honeymoon trip to Australia that I had a first taste of the thrill in gambling. Lady luck was with me. All shops were closed after 5pm. The only entertainment left was the "slot" and it is almost everywhere, it is Aussies favourite past time. It was cheap, with betting start with just one cent, everyone will play. And when luck is with you, the win can be quite substantial. Since then there was no turning back. The thrill of slot machines lasted till today. Unfortunately, there is no cheap alternative back in Singapore, betting start with 20 cents! The purpose of this article is to let you know, the statement "Youths whose parents are gamblers are at higher risk of becoming addicts" holds some truth. Beware. I really wonder what will happen when the casino opens in Marina, and my office is just next door! Baby wants to learn! 08/14/2009
Whenever my little boy gets bored, he walks around the house and touches everything that interest him. One of the thing which he will always fuss for, is for mummy to turn-on the computer. He will then sits on my lap, pull the mouse and tap on the keyboard. The learn japanese page is his favourite. He will watch it over and over again. ![]() It is never too young to start your baby on the learning journey. Baby are absorbing knowledge like sponge absorbing water the moment they are borned. If you are worried about sending your baby to school too early, depriving him of his childhood, consider home schooling your baby at own pace. For a list of educational tools suitable for your child, please take a look at my product review blogs on kiasuparents.com Washing Machine Fun 08/02/2009
![]() Will you put your baby in there? Sometimes, I really salute to those creative mothers. I spotted this picture in MyPaper this morning, thanks to the thoughtful bus company that I paid premium fare to take the ride from Sengkang to Shenton way. Not sure where this mummy got her inspiration from. My purpose of picking up this article is not to criticise but just to create awareness. For some mothers, I am sure they will say "Wah, how creative!" That way my baby can stay away from trouble while i carry on with my house chores. Who doesn't have a washing machine at home nowadays?! For others, like me, we probably shake our heads and said "NO Way, don't risk it". I have not seen the original article, not sure why this mummy put her baby in the there. But I can see that there is no water in there. But somehow, it reminds me of tub-swimming. ![]() tub pool from Hua Xia I used to send my son to Hua Xia when he was young. Maybe I am just not creative enough, I thought of buying a tub pool but it has never crossed my mind that I could use the washing machine. And for parents with budget constraints, honestly, this tub pool is quite affordable compare to the risk of possible medical bills! Washing machine is full of chemicals residue from the detergent. And baby skin are very sensitive. How much does your child's health cost?! And I think Hua Xia is still offering free trial swimming. Decoding Insurance Products 07/23/2009
This is a large topic and I have been wanting to write on it for a long time. Insurance is such a complicated product, everyday there is something new because they are structured product, every company offers it with a little variation. So you really need to compare them carefully. The very first thing is find a devoted, experienced agent that is able to communicate with you. What do I mean by that? I mean find someone that understands you. Most of the time you call up an insurance agent, they will just lay the cards on the table for you to choose. The so-called presentation is a replay of what they learn in classroom, and for all clients, the same. Basically, find an agent that you have chemistry with and is able to provide value-adding (Q&A), knows not only their product but also the industry standard. There are many types of insurance products, the most common namely: Life insurance, Hospital & Surgical insurance (H&S), Group Term Life and Rider. Life insurance provides life protection. The policy insures you against death. Depending on your affordability, and death benefit that you want, the agent will make you a quote. Different company name this product differently. I came across one, bought ten years ago from Great Eastern. It was named something like GE (Child) Savings Plan. But it is actually a life insurance product. The policy holder, Daddy or Mummy, insured against their children for death benefits. Why call it savings? Because life insurance product has no maturity date, it protects till end of life. However, the regular premium will accrue a cash value which the insurance company will debit to your policy. So say in 40 years time, you decide to surrender the policy, you get the cash value accumulated which is typically lower than the total premium paid-to-date. Everyone buy at least a life policy because money used to buy this product is tax deductible. In case you do not know, suicide within the first year is not payable. I recently bought a GE Flexilife Plan (limited pay) for Samson. I bought this product because i was told that the life protection for this policy is transferable to the third generation and it is limited pay. What they mean by transferable? Basically, I buy the policy for Samson, he can transfer it to his children. Sounds great isn't it? Moreover limited pay meaning that I only pay premium for a limited time, instead of traditional policy that needs me to pay a lifetime! But wait, the so-called transferable component is a marketing gimmick. Let me explain. For child protection policy, the guardian (usually daddy or mummy) is the policy holder. The insured is the child. Assuming the policy is hold till end-of-life, when the insured passed away, the death benefits plus cash value goes to his dependant. If the policy is surrender before the insured passed away, the cash value goes to policy holder. GE Flexilife Plan works this way. When the child (insured) turns 21, the guardian transfer the rights of ownership of this policy to the child. Meaning when the policy is surrendered, the cash value goes to the child (now the policy holder). e.g. When Samson's child turns 21, Samson can again transfer the rights of ownership of this policy to his child. When Samson passed away, the death benefits plus cash value goes to his child. ![]() So when compare the two, you will realised that, basically not much different. To acheive the second objective in the second scenario in traditional child protection policy, you just have to will your assets correctly. But the key thing to note here is the choice of words confusion. What is transferable is the rights of ownership of the policy NOT the life protection. When buying insurance products, you need to have RABBIT ears and scruitinise every single details! Life insurance policy typically comes with a TPD and Critical Illness Rider. Some pays an advancement, while others pay in addition. If the policy insure you death benefit of $200,000. And accelerate $75,000 on diagnosis of the 30 critical illnesses, what it means is you will get $75,000. But death benefits becomes $200,000 less $75,000. If the policy insures you death benefit of $200,000 with a add-on protection of $75,000 on diagnosis of the 30 critical illnesses. You will get $75,000 only if you survive (usually 30-60days). Your death benefits remains at $200,000. Diagnosis of cancer goes by stages. I have no experience on claiming this, thank God! So I cannot comment more. One may be at stage 3 and H&S policy payout only at stage 4. If someone has experience on this and likes to share, please do. TPD refers to terminal illnesses and permanent disability. Read the table of payout for PD carefully. Again not all products are equal. Are you already confused? If yes, read the above again until you understand before you read the next section on H&S product. Only one nap! 07/13/2009
It all started last week. I had my jaw dropped when I saw Samson's record book that he is only taking one nap per day. I was told that tots usually start to drop the two naptime into one when they are at least 24 months. He is just turning 16 months. Learn about the Peranakan Culture 07/01/2009
The Chinese TV series Little Nyonya has taken interest in Peranakan culture to another level entirely. It has sparks an overwhelming interest among the Singaporean to learn about the peranakan culture. It has been a long time since MediaCorpTV has made great success. Congrats to the production crews. To get a quick snapshot of the chinese peranakan heritage in Singapore, read this article written by Dr Partha Desikan, a scientist from Bangalore, India. ![]() Take a pictorial tour of the DBS House in Malacca located on Tun Tan Cheng Lock Street. The townhouse comprises of two adjoining plots, was converted into a holiday house for a corporation. Much of the original character of the house was conserved and restored. My DBS colleagues who had stayed there said it is a little creepy. A lot of noises coming from the staircase, like people running up and down, but when you look out, there is no one. So when you're free, just drive down to Malacca and take a look. If you are given a second chance to live your life, how would it be? Motivating your young ones to read! 06/12/2009

I am certain that all mothers will agree with me. So we got pregnant and then we eat and eat and the tummy gets bigger and bigger. Ten months later, our little darlings are delivered. And then what are we going to do with the big tummy? Diet loh, exercise loh. Dear mothers out there, it will not disappeared overnight. There are a minior lucky ones who loose their tummy overnight, like my sister-in-law. When she saw me 3 days after delivery, her jaw almost dropped to the floor. I looked like I was still 4 months pregnant. To admit, I was the lazy type, never go gym, never exercise. Then when I returned work, someone told me, I only have ten months to loose those weight or it will be forever yours to keep. No wonder so many happy mothers wearing oversized clothes. All my previous working clothes cannot fit, because of my big flabby tummy. First Confirmed H1N1 case in Singapore 05/27/2009
Swine flu isn’t new. Like humans, pigs get the flu with symptoms like fever, coughing and lethargy. But this bug that’s been infecting humans over the past few weeks is a new strain that’s managed to cross over from pigs and hit people who have no immunity. According to New York pediatrician Dr. Anatoly Belilovsky, swine flu – technically influenza A (H1N1) – is a strain of flu previously only seen in pigs. "In fact, all flu strains arise in pigs and poultry, and cause human epidemics when they become transmissible between humans," he says. Symptoms of Swine Flu are similar to the regular seasonal flu bug, the symptoms of swine flu include fever, lethargy, coughing and loss of appetite. Although some people with this virus have reported a runny nose, sore throat, nausea and diarrhea. Swine flu, after running rampant through Mexico, is now making global rounds and had just landed in Singapore. Our very first confirmed H1N1 case - a 22-year old Singaporean SMU student who was in New York from May 14-24 and returned to Singapore on 26 May on SQ25 (6:30am). She has since been admitted to the Communicable Diseases Centre (CDC) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) has initiated contact tracing of her close contacts. No further advisory has yet been issued by the MOH. More details can be seen from Channel News Asia's website. ![]() swine flu originated in pig The good thing is, despite its name, people cannot get swine flu from eating pork or pork products. Since pork must always be cooked thoroughly, getting the illness through consumption should not be a concern. So don't listen to the aunties and uncles on the street and ceased eating pork. Antivirals like Tamiflu which are being used to treat people infected with the virus cannot be guaranteed as a treatment for swine flu at this time, says the WHO. New strains of the flu can be immune to the antivirals on the market today. When the virus that causes swine flu in pigs combines with human influenza virus and then mutates to allow itself to infect humans, we're left with a new strain of flu. Swine flu, like other flu viruses, is an airborne illness spread through the respiratory tract. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to other influenza illnesses, including high fever, body aches, headaches, coughing, sore throat, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and chills. More information can be obtained from CDC website. ![]() As of 26 May, the Swine flu has spread to over 46 countries and infected some 13,000 people and caused 90 deaths. At 13,000 the current number of confirmed cases for Swine flu has already surpassed the total probably number of SARS cases estimated at over 8,000. Although SARS was ten times more deadly, the current outbreak is already four times more widespread. My personal advice is do not take it lightly, be vigilant, but do not over react either. Temper tantrums are an unsettling but natural part of the child development process. My maid had her first OFF day on Sunday and I had a taste of my growing boy tantrum. When he doesn't get what he wanted, he used to sit and bend down covering his face. Now he starts to kicks his two little legs in protest, roll around on the floor. I know if I don't start doing something to correct this behaviour, he will simply become more aggressive. |
