I saw Samson banging onto funiture while making his crawl.  Although he did not cry, I saw his mouth expression that he is in pain.  I had to teach him obstacle crossing.

I went to the storeroom and took out a empty carton box.  I cut away the four side flips and leave the hollow.  So now I make a tunnel for samson to crawl through. You can decide if you want to place the carton box horizontally or vertically.

I started with the difficult one first, I placed the box horizontally, so Samson has to lower his head and lie flat on his tummy to get through it (like a tiger crawl).

My maid thought it was too difficult and place the box vertically.  That makes it easier.  After two trial run, he nows throw his own toy and crawl through the tunnel.

The good thing about this game is that, I stopped seeing him banging onto furnitures, now he maneuvers round the obstacles.

Samson was first introduced to tunnel at tumbletots. The video shows Samson first crawl through a wooden box tunnel.  At first he has hesitation. He tried go left, run away, then go over to get his toy.  But eventually managed to overcome his fear for darkness.

Of course, I went home and made Samson carton box tunnel.  When he first saw the tunnel, he was gazing with big eyes.  After a few trial run, he nows throw his own toy through the tunnle then crawl through to retrieve it.  And when he is done, he give himself applause.

My maid does it differently.  She has a foldable mattress so she just use that to make a tunnel for Samson.

Sing this nursery rhyme to the tune of "ten little indians".

One little, two little, three little fingers. four little, five little, six little fingers. Seven little, eight little, night little fingers, ten little wriggling fingers. Then sing it in reverse.

You need to do this facing your baby so he can see you in action with the little fingers.  And when I reach the lyric - ten little wriggling fingers - I will tickle him.  Action songs make memory work better.  Try it, and I'm sure your little ones will like it too.

You bet!  He laugh and runs away from mummy. Then some time come back for more.  He may behave that he cares less, but i know that when he is having fun, he remembers.  One day... he will surprise me.

Cookie Jars 06/01/2009

Get at least two transparent cookie jars.  Place your baby favourite toy into the jars.  You will have to unscrew the jar cover.  Your baby will be enticed to lift the cover and take out the toy from the jar. This helps improve her fine motor skills.

It was Chinese New Year and every house we visited, Samson saw interesting cookie jars.  He was amazed and tried to grab them.  So I decided to let him play with the empty jars shortly after we cleaned out the cookies.  I tried to teach him how to unscrew the lid himself but he gets frustrated.  Guess mummy is too impatient, baby will only learn about closewise and anti-closewise logic around 20 months.

Hide and seek 06/01/2009

Place your baby in the baby cot with his or her favourite toy. Hide the toy (behind the bumpers or the pillow). See if he/she will try to find it.  This game teaches baby permanence of object, even if it is out-of-sight.

If your baby is crawling, you can play this game on the floor. Simply lay her on her tummy and put the toy in front of her.

Move the toy to one side of her and see if she will crawl around to find it.

Once your baby begins looking for the toy, it’s important to help her find it quickly. This will help her develop confidence

Believe it or not. Samson taught me this game.  He hided his book behind the bumpers and later reveal it himself and started giggling.

Trampoline Game 06/01/2009

Lay on your back and draw your knees up to your chest, crossing your feet at the ankles.

Rest your baby on top of your lower legs and gently bounce your legs up and down.

Move your legs faster and slower as you recite this poem:
Bounce, bounce, up and down,
Bounce, bounce all around.
Bounce fast,
Bounce slow,
Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, BOOM!

On the word "BOOM," lift your baby up and bring her to your chest for a big hug.

One day I heard giggling sounds from Samson's room, shortly after I came out.  So I went back and saw my maid playing with Samson.  He was delighted, because it is an exclusive game which only my maid play with him. She invented this game herself without reciting the poem.
